Why I Am Now A Sony Worshiper
So, at the beginning of July I randomly inquired about a job position on my campus that was being offered by some company named Volt that I had never heard of before.
When I got a call an hour later and acquired a few more sketchy/vague details, my step mom assumed these were people who wanted to sell me into the sex trade.
Nonetheless I got a Skype interview with someone who appeared to be a legitimate business man, and two days after my original inquiry, I had a flexible, well-paying job and an all-expenses-paid trip to San Diego for five days of training in the art of promoting Sony products. These five days took place last Monday-Friday.
I really don’t think last week happened.
DAY 1: Escorted in Escalade with new Penn State friend, Mike, to hotel, then shuttled to spa. Came back, received $350 camera, checked in. Met awesome roommate, Simone, and ate amazing food. Crashed around 11.
DAY 2: Up at 6:45, roommate gets out of shower and has somehow made bathroom smell like tropical rainforest. Get ready, snarf breakfast, bus to Sony building. Lots of people talking. Need caffeine. Coffee, tea, and first energy drink ever. Come back to listen to more speakers after lunch and find tables covered in beautiful glorious technology: laptop, walkman, speakers, headphones, and Bloggie. Delicious dinner at Mexican restaurant, private screening of hilarious movie that hasn’t come out yet. Hang out with new friend, Tim, from WVU. Sleep.
DAY 3: More talking people at Sony building. Learn to use really cool Vegas movie software. Interesting artist man shows trippy video about floating houses and tornadoes made of cars…. what? This day is so long. Dinner at The Wave House. Lots of people fail at surfing on the man made wave. Run like a wild thing into the Pacific Ocean. It is so gorgeous and cold. Back at the hotel hanging out with friend, Tim, again until one in the morning. When he goes to sleep, go check out party in someones room. Hang out with Mike and lots of peanut butter while watching Jersey Shore. Do not sleep until 3:30.
DAY 4: Nearly die of exhaustion. Stressful demo competition between different ambassadors. The group I was switched out of on the first day wins Sony game consoles and monitors and my correct group does not place. *IRONY* Dinner surrounded by mountains on the top floor of the Sony building. Feeling pretty fly despite losing. Go back to hotel, contact Dave to tell him I am still alive. Hang out with Mike. Go to party in same room as night before. So many people. Noise violation. Everyone whispers and pretends not to be there. Slowly people go away. Intellectual discussion and being hit on by a cute but really forward Asian guy. Laughing at hilarious, wonderful, beautiful friend, Dorothy. Tim shows up after going to downtown San Diego clubs. Sit in the hall with Tim, Mike, and Dorothy until wondering where my roommate is. Discovery that Mike’s roommate is hooking up in their room with my roommate. Go Simone. Mike falls asleep on Simone’s bed, Dorothy manages to take a huge piece out of her finger with her razor accidentally, and cuddling with Tim. Simone comes back and denies everything, then spills. No sleep until… 5:00?
DAY 5: Wake up at 8:00 still wearing clothes from yesterday. Scramble to pack things and choke down some breakfast. Need to leave at 9:15……. where is Mike? Get on bus. Seriously, where is Mike? Waiting. Finally Mike is there after being woken up by wonderful Sony employee, Janelle, and bus leaves. Bus driver directs friend, Sophie from Temple, and I to wrong terminal. Walk across half the airport. Check bags and Mike appears between Sophie and I , arms around our shoulders. Screaming baby behind my seat on the flight. It is so long. Arrive late due to storm and get luggage. Happy/sad goodbye hugs. Go home. SLEEP.
